- 3Calculate the total tip, grand total, and equal amount owed by each person.
Formula
Per person = bill × (1 + tip rate) ÷ number of people
The selected tip is added to the entered bill and the result is divided equally, with optional round-up reconciliation.
Calculation steps
- Multiply the entered bill by the tip percentage.
- Add the tip to the bill to obtain the unrounded total.
- Apply the chosen round-up rule, if any.
- Divide the reconciled total and tip equally among the entered number of people.
Worked example
An 80 bill with an 18% tip is 94.40 total. Split equally among four people, each person pays 23.60.
Assumptions

- The bill is split equally; itemized or weighted splits are not modeled.
- Round-up modes use whole major currency units and add the difference to the effective tip.
- Mandatory service charges are not automatically included or identified.

Frequently asked questions
Does the tip apply before or after tax?
It applies to exactly the bill amount you enter. Enter a pre-tax or after-tax bill according to your preference and local practice.
How does per-person round-up work?
Each exact share is rounded up to the next whole currency unit, then multiplied by the number of people so the total reconciles.
Why can the effective tip percentage increase?
Any round-up difference is treated as additional tip so that the split shares add back to the displayed total.
Is a mandatory service charge a tip?
This tool does not classify charges. The IRS distinguishes voluntary tips from mandatory service charges, so check the bill before adding another tip.
