How to use this calculator

  1. 1Add board surfaces and exclusions.
  2. 2Select the intended finish level.
  3. 3Enter product coverage matching that finish.
  4. 4Choose tape method, optional skim coat, corner bead and prices.

Formula

Containers = ceil(adjusted area ÷ coverage + skim equivalent)

Tape is calculated from an entered rate or measured total length.

Calculation steps

  • Calculate net board area.
  • Apply waste.
  • Convert finishing and skim coverage to container equivalents.
  • Calculate tape and bead.
  • Round purchasable units upward.

Worked example

USG indicates approximately two 4.5-gallon pails per 1,000 ft² of wallboard for joint finishing.

Assumptions

  • Coverage matches the selected finish and product.
  • Tape rate is user supplied.
  • Skim coverage is separate.
  • Whole containers and accessories round up.
  • Finish acceptance is outside scope.
