How to use this calculator

Formula
Required pieces = round up(base pieces × (1 + allowance ÷ 100))
Flooring uses material coverage area. Tile mode calculates rows and columns for each area, includes grout joints, and chooses the lower-count tile orientation.
Calculation steps
- Validate all area, material, grout, allowance, and package coverage inputs.
- Convert the project and material dimensions into meters.
- Calculate each area independently and determine its base piece count.
- Add the piece counts and round up after applying the selected allowance.
- When package coverage is supplied, divide required material coverage by coverage per box and round up.
Worked example
A 5 m by 4 m room using 120 cm by 20 cm planks needs 84 planks before allowance and 93 planks with a 10% allowance.
Assumptions
- Every project area is rectangular and measured to the finished installation boundary.
- Flooring estimates assume usable offcuts can be reused within each area.
- Tile layouts are aligned to rectangular edges and may rotate the tile by 90 degrees when that reduces the count.
- The allowance is applied to the summed base piece count and is controlled by the user.
- Package estimates use manufacturer-stated coverage, which should be verified before purchase.

How much extra flooring or tile should I add?
Use an allowance appropriate for the layout, cuts, breakage, pattern, and product. The calculator does not prescribe one percentage for every project.
How does grout width affect the tile count?
Tile mode treats each tile plus its following joint as a repeating module and calculates whole rows and columns for every rectangular area.
Can I combine multiple rooms or walls?
Yes. Combined areas supports up to 10 rectangles, each with its own dimensions and measurement unit.
Why can the box count cover more area than the project?
Boxes must be purchased whole, and the piece estimate also includes your allowance. The remaining coverage can be kept for repairs.
Does this calculator handle diagonal or patterned layouts?
Not explicitly. Increase the allowance to account for layouts that create more cuts, and verify the plan with the installer or manufacturer.
