How to use this calculator
- 1Add surfaces and exclusions.
- 2Choose the material and coat arrangement.
- 3Enter total base thickness and bag yield.
- 4Enter optional finish and lath yields, waste and prices.
Formula
Bags = ceil(area × thickness × waste factor ÷ yield volume)
Yield volume is derived from manufacturer coverage at a reference thickness.
Calculation steps
- Calculate net area.
- Convert base and finish thickness to volume.
- Apply waste.
- Derive package yield.
- Round bags and lath rolls upward.
Worked example
An 80 lb stucco base bag may cover about 20–24 ft² at 3/8 in according to product data.
Assumptions
- Base thickness includes all base coats.
- Yields come from current data.
- Areas do not overlap.
- Lath is a simple area takeoff.
- Assembly design is outside scope.

Frequently asked questions
What is combined base thickness?
The installed thickness of all base coats together.
Why are base and finish separate?
Their yields, thicknesses and prices commonly differ.
Can it estimate gypsum or lime plaster?
Yes, with the correct product yield.
Does three-coat mode set thickness?
No, thickness remains explicit.
Does it design reinforcement?
No.
