How to use this calculator
- 1Add each straight wall separately, including its length, height, measurement unit and explicit extra studs for corners, intersections or backing.

Formula
Layout studs = ceil(wall length ÷ spacing) + 1; purchase quantity = ceil(required members × (1 + waste %))
Opening groups remove estimated interrupted layout positions, then add explicit king, jack and cripple members. Plates, headers, sheathing and fasteners are calculated independently.
Calculation steps
- Convert wall and opening geometry to meters and calculate gross and opening areas.
- Count regularly spaced layout positions on each wall, estimate positions interrupted by openings and retain both wall endpoints.
- Add king studs, entered jack studs, estimated cripple studs and user-entered corner or backing studs.
- Apply framing waste to stud count and plate length, then round up to whole stock pieces.
- Optionally deduct openings from sheathing area, apply sheathing waste and round up by sheet coverage.
- Estimate fastener boxes and total only the material prices entered by the user.
Worked example
A 20 ft × 8 ft wall with one 3 ft × 4 ft window and one 3 ft × 6.67 ft door, 16 in spacing, three extra studs and 10% framing waste requires 29 modeled studs and 32 purchase studs, plus nine 8 ft plate pieces and five 4 ft × 8 ft sheathing sheets under the default assumptions.
Assumptions
- This is a material takeoff, not a structural wall design. Stud size, species, grade, spacing, wall height, loads, bracing, connections and fire or seismic requirements must come from an approved design.
- Openings are modeled as aligned rectangular groups. Actual framing can change with opening location, adjacent openings, corners, intersecting walls, header depth, sill details and advanced-framing methods.
- Header ply count and bearing length are user inputs only; the calculator never selects or approves a header.
- Extra studs explicitly represent corners, intersections, partition backing or project-specific details instead of assuming one universal corner method.
- Stock counts do not optimize offcuts between members or walls and do not include blocking, fire blocking, temporary bracing, hold-downs or engineered hardware.
- Costs exclude labor, delivery, tax and unentered materials.

Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator choose stud spacing?
No. Spacing is an explicit project input and must be checked against the applicable design, sheathing system and local requirements.
Why are extra studs entered manually?
Corner, intersection and backing details vary. An explicit count keeps those project decisions visible instead of hiding a universal assumption.
Does it size headers?
No. It only totals the header plies and bearing length entered from an approved design.
Are openings deducted from sheathing?
Only when selected. Some ordering workflows retain small openings as allowance, so the choice is explicit.
Does the result optimize lumber cuts?
No. Whole stock quantities are rounded independently and reusable offcuts are not modeled.
Can it replace structural drawings?
No. It is a quantity-planning tool only.
