Formula
Exact age = whole calendar years + whole calendar months + remaining days
Whole anniversaries are counted first, using the last valid day of a month when a leap-day anniversary is unavailable, then remaining calendar days are counted.
Calculation steps
- Validate the birth date and age-at date as Gregorian calendar dates.
- Reject an age-at date before the birth date.
- Count whole calendar years, then whole calendar months, then remaining days.
- Count total calendar-day boundaries for week, day, and hour equivalents.
- Find the next clamped birthday anniversary and days remaining.
Worked example
A person born August 21, 1990 is exactly 36 years old on August 21, 2026. The date is also 13,149 calendar days after birth.
Assumptions
- Age is measured using Gregorian date-only values without times or time zones.
- Completed months do not include the remaining partial month.
- Hours are calendar-day equivalents at 24 hours per day.
- A February 29 anniversary clamps to February 28 in a non-leap year.
- This calculator reports chronological age, not legal age rules for a particular jurisdiction.
