Formula
Fuel cost = distance in km × (L/100 km ÷ 100) × price per liter
Distance, fuel economy, and price are normalized to kilometers, liters per 100 kilometers, and price per liter before calculating.
Calculation steps
- Convert the total traveled distance to kilometers.
- Normalize the entered economy to liters per 100 kilometers.
- Multiply distance by normalized consumption to find liters required.
- Normalize fuel price to price per liter and multiply by fuel required.
Worked example
A 300 km trip at 7.5 L/100 km uses 22.5 liters. At 1.65 per liter, the estimated fuel cost is 37.125 before display rounding.
Assumptions
- U.S. MPG uses the U.S. liquid gallon; Imperial MPG uses the 4.54609-liter Imperial gallon.
- The entered efficiency applies to the entire route and every repeated trip.
- Idling, detours, traffic, weather, driving style, load, and price changes are not modeled.
- Passenger cost is an equal division of fuel cost only.

What is the difference between U.S. MPG and Imperial MPG?
They use different gallon sizes. The calculator keeps them separate and labels each result.
Should a round trip be entered twice?
Either enter the complete route distance once or enter the one-way distance and set the trip count accordingly.
Why can actual fuel use differ?
Published or entered economy is an estimate; driving, traffic, weather, load, and route conditions affect actual use.
Does the calculator fetch local fuel prices?
No. It uses only the price and price unit you enter.
