Formula

contact X/Y = frame reach/stack + steerer projection + stem projection + handlebar offset

Every component is resolved into horizontal and vertical coordinates from the bottom bracket.

Calculation steps

  • Project the headset, spacers and half stem-clamp height along the steerer axis.
  • Resolve stem length using effective elevation from head angle and stem angle.
  • Add handlebar reach and rise, compare coordinates, and rank candidate parts by two-dimensional distance.

Worked example

Replacing a 100 mm stem and 20 mm spacers with a 90 mm stem and 30 mm spacers moves the example contact point about 13 mm back and 7 mm up.

Assumptions

  • Stem angle is measured relative to a line perpendicular to the steerer.
  • Spacer and headset heights are measured along the steerer axis.
  • Handlebar reach and rise are signed offsets from the clamp center.
  • Component clearance, steerer insertion and handling remain separate checks.

Frequently asked questions

Is frame reach the same as handlebar reach?

No. Frame reach stops at the head-tube reference point; the stem, spacers and handlebar move the final contact point.

Why does adding spacers also shorten reach?

The steerer leans rearward, so moving upward along it adds height while moving the stem clamp slightly backward.

Does the closest coordinate match guarantee good handling?

No. Stem length, bar width, mass distribution and frame steering geometry still affect handling.

Can I use integrated handlebars?

Yes, if their effective stem length, angle and handlebar offsets are known and entered consistently.
