How to use this calculator

  1. 1Add one rectangle for a simple deck, or split an L-shaped or disconnected project into non-overlapping rectangles and choose the board direction for each.
  2. 2Enter actual board width, required gap, available stock length, waste, optional picture-frame border, and framing spacing from the product instructions or approved plan.
  3. 3Enable only the material groups you need, replace railing and structural quantities with project-specific values, and optionally enter supplier prices.

Formula

Field rows = ceil((field width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap)); stock boards = reusable-cut layout + border boards + waste

Each rectangle is calculated independently. Boards run in the selected direction, joists run perpendicular, whole stock pieces are rounded up, and compatible remainder cuts are reused within a section.

Calculation steps

  • Convert each rectangular section and every product dimension into meters.
  • Reserve the selected picture-frame inset, then calculate field rows from board width and gap.
  • Split every row by the entered stock length and reuse compatible remainder cuts before applying whole-board waste.
  • Count perpendicular joist lines from the entered spacing; calculate rim boards only when framing takeoff is enabled.
  • Estimate face screws or hidden clips from board-to-joist connections, seams, borders, package size, and allowance.
  • Estimate optional railing components and total only the material prices entered by the user.

Worked example

A 5 m × 4 m deck using 140 mm boards, 5 mm gaps, 4.8 m stock lengths, one picture-frame row, and 10% decking waste estimates 33 stock deck boards. Framing and fasteners remain separate quantities.

Assumptions

  • Every section is a rectangle and is purchased independently; overlapping rectangles and shared boundaries are not deducted.
  • Reusable-cut logic assumes suitable undamaged offcuts from the same section can be used, without modeling saw kerf, color variation, grain, stagger rules, or exact seam locations.
  • Picture-frame linear length is a planning takeoff and does not include additional blocking, doubled framing, clips, or proprietary details required by a specific layout.
  • Joist spacing, member sizes, beam length, posts, footings, connections, guards, and structural details come from product instructions, local requirements, or an approved design.
  • Fastener and railing counts are geometric estimates; corners, openings, post widths, proprietary systems, and manufacturer installation rules can change quantities.
  • Costs include only entered material prices and exclude labor, permits, design, tax, delivery, equipment, demolition, finishes, and disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator size joists, beams, posts, or footings?

No. It counts materials from dimensions and spacing you enter. Structural sizes and spans depend on loads, species, grade, product, connections, soil, climate, jurisdiction, and an approved design.

How are L-shaped decks calculated?

Split the plan into non-overlapping rectangles. Every section is estimated separately, so do not enter overlapping areas and review shared edges before purchasing rim or railing materials.

Why can the stock-board count differ from an area-only calculator?

This calculator uses board direction, width, gap, stock length, seams, border length, compatible remainder cuts, and whole-board rounding rather than dividing area by nominal board area.

Are hidden clips and start clips exact?

They are planning estimates from board-to-joist intersections. Butt seams, borders, breaker boards, stairs, metal framing, and proprietary systems must follow the exact manufacturer ordering guide.

Does the picture-frame option include extra blocking?

No. The option adds border decking length and an approximate connection count, but the supporting frame must be detailed separately.

Does the estimated cost include labor?

No. It totals only the material unit prices you enter.
